A wild squirrel prefers forests because it is easy to find food and nesting material. But the curious critters also venture to backyards in parks in urban areas. Squirrels tend to nest in hollow trunks or branches. The nests are crushed together by Thistledown mosses, dried grasses, twigs, feathers, leaves and bark. If the squirrel lives in captivity, it is best to try to imitate its external environment. The cage should be at least 3 cubic feet per squirrel. Mesh cages are removable trays and easy cleaning preferred. Nesting cages are usually out of the cage, but an opening in the cage. Place a variety of materials such as cranes in the leaves of the cage, twigs, grass and bark. This will give you options when squirrels build their nests.
